Log truck driver escapes rollover

A 70-year-old driver had a lucky escape yesterday when his log truck rolled on Glen Huon Rd, near Huonville.

The truck was travelling east towards Huonville yesterday when it failed to take a left-hand turn.

The truck crossed the road and ended up in a culvert on the right-hand side of the road.

The driver suffered minor bruises and lacerations and was taken to the Hobart Private Hospital but discharged soon after.

The trailer lost its load of veneer logs and the traffic was impeded for nearly five hours.

The crash scene was attended by the Tasmania Fire Service, which dispersed diesel fuel that had spilled on to the road.

Huonville police constable Craig Vermey said the driver was “a very lucky man”.

“The driver’s side of the prime mover went down into the ditch, so he would have suffered the full impact,” he said.

“I was surprised that he only had minor injuries.”

Police believed the load on the truck may have moved, causing the trailer to roll.

The bend had a recommended speed of 45km/h and police said witnesses believed the truck was travelling at that speed or less.

The logs were being taken to Watson’s Sawmill in Huonville.

Last year, a 40-year-old log truck driver was trapped for nearly four hours when his fully laden log truck crashed off the Bridle Track Rd between Sheffield and Kimberley.
